Recently, a friend of mine sent me an e-mail and said they desperately needed to find some scanner software. I was very confused by what they were asking, and I send back an e-mail saying as much. They told me that their scanner had stopped working, and their computer kept asking them for scanner software. They had no idea what this meant, and they had no idea where to get it. Though some people may get a chuckle out of this e-mail, I can understand why some people get so easily confused when it comes to computers.

When you buy a new scanner for your computer, it should come with the scanner software. If you’re new scanner has not come with this software, you need to contact the company immediately. For the most part, the scanner software will be installed on your system without you doing anything. You may not even know that it has happened. When you hook new hardware up to your computer, the computer should recognize that it is there, and will download the necessary drivers. In some cases there will be a CD with your scanner software included with your purchase. All you will have to do is put the CD into your CD drive, and the computer will do the rest for you after a few simple clicks of your mouse.

There may come a time though, when you have problems with your computer. Sometimes a computer crash or system meltdown will cause your scanner software to be lost. When this happens, all you have to do is reinstall your scanner software via the CD that came with your scanner. If for some reason you no longer have this CD, there may be a simple answer to your problem. Look up your particular scanner company online, and go to their website. In most cases, they will have scanner software available for download. They do this because they know that sometimes people lose their software, and this is much easier than sending you out a new CD.

If you find that you have lost your scanner software, and that your scanner cannot be found online, chances are good that your scanner is so old that the software is no longer available. You may try to call the manufacturer to see what they can do for you, but this might be a case when you just have to go out and buy a new model. Some of the earlier scanners that were made are not compatible with the computers of today. If this is the case for you, you may have been lucky that it worked this long to begin with.
