There’s been a lot of debate lately about the shrinking size of fashion models. With all the attention on size zero girls who may or may not be battling anorexia, more and more designers and fashion magazines are looking for a healthier example of the female body. Plus size models are becoming more main stream which is great news for millions of girls wanting to become professional models.
The road to any career in modeling is long and covered with all kinds of hurdles. This is true whether it’s child models or plus size models trying to get discovered. Although we’ve all heard stories of young women being at the mall or in a football stadium being discovered and thrust into the world of modeling, this rarely happens. Instead a young woman who wants to enter the world of plus size models needs to find an agent to represent her.
In almost every major city there are several different modeling agencies that women and men who are interested in pursuing this as a career can contact. These agencies generally focus on certain types of models be it male, child or plus size models. When visiting one it’s wise to listen carefully to all critique they have to offer. Their job is to promote their models and if they see potential in you, they may ask you to adjust your hair color, your hair style or perhaps work on improving your posture or walk.
Some companies who call themselves modeling agencies are hiding behind the name in an effort to offer modeling classes and make-up courses for a cost. These are best to avoid unless they come with a promise of a modeling contract. Many women have spent thousands of dollars with the hope they would take these classes and end up the next supermodel. That’s unlikely to happen.
The type of work any model does depends largely on their look as well as their natural abilities. Some plus size models do only catalog work where they are required to wear different outfits that will appear in print. Others do fashion shows where they get to strut their stuff on the catwalk.
Regardless of where they are making their living these models are sending a very positive message to young women. When a teenage girl sees plus size models in jeans advertisement or on television promoting a product, they instantly feel better about themselves. Being a young woman is difficult enough without the constant reminder from the media of how beautiful a very thin model is. Most plus size models feel great about who they are and what they look like and this is noticeable to everyone who sees them.
