Many people think that drawing is a special talent given to a select few and that this talent really can’t be taught to the average Joe. However, anyone can learn how to draw better than he ever imagined by following some steps. The ability to draw well is a process and while you might not be able to create a masterpiece any time soon you can learn how to draw very well.

Drawing is a skill that takes practice. I discovered that if you don’t hone this skill and practice on a regular basis you can lose some of your edge. It is easier for some of us to learn how to draw than others but no matter what, someone who practices will see better results no matter how much natural talent he has.

Natural talent will get you only so far. When you learn how to draw you also learn how to develop and maintain skills. If you don’t exercise your skills you will get a little out of shape. Getting back to your former artistic shape is pretty simple. You just have to practice your craft on a regular basis.

Part of the way that someone can learn how to draw well is to see things differently. Drawing is just as much about seeing as it is about doing. Your perception is very valuable and you can convey how you see the world thorough your work. Following are steps to seeing things artistically.

Look at shapes instead of the subject as a whole. Many of us tend to look at the entire face instead of the almond shape of the eyes and the way the cheeks form majestic crescent waves under the eyes. When you learn how to draw you also learn how to see different forms within the form.

This might make more sense once you get started. Seeing forms within forms will soon become a natural way of seeing your subjects after awhile. There is also the problem of how you see your own work. When you learn how to draw you will notice that some pieces just don’t look right no matter what you do.

Just turn the drawing upside-down. This causes your brain to re-see the drawing without your “inner eye” giving its preconceived perception. The first things that you want do to learn how to draw is to get some kind of instruction. This could be a video, book or class. Whatever gets you inspired to start will do.
