Happy Hour

When I got my happy hour invitation online, it suddenly set me to worrying. Were things really that much different at my new workplace? If I was getting online happy hour invitations, would happy hour be the same? They were inviting me to a place that I'd never been to before, after all. They said that it was great. They said that the drink specials were excellent, the company was good, and it was one of the best places to meet single professionals in the city. Nonetheless, I was a little bit worried.

I really shouldn't have been. Maybe my job had changed. Maybe my city had changed. Nonetheless, happy hour had not changed. There were great happy hour drinks specials, good people, and karaoke to top it all off. I was a little bit shy at first, being new to the workplace. I did not want to get drunk and make a fool of myself – at least before my coworkers had. But happy hours have a way of overcoming your hesitations, and soon I was singing along to old 80s tunes with the best of them. It really was a great time, and it made me feel more comfortable with my coworkers.

Best of all, I think I did meet someone. Don't get me wrong, it's not a serious thing. After all, meeting happy hour singles over a few drinks is not a big deal. Still, I have a date set up for the next weekend.  We're going out for the usual – dinner and drinks. It sounds promising, though. I really like her and she is in a similar line of work to what I do. I don't know if we have a lot in common yet – it was hard to talk over the noise of happy hour. Even still, I know she loves to drink, and she has a great smile.

All in all, happy hour Portland is a pretty good time. Don't get me wrong, there are other more happening cities. Nonetheless, a lot of the time they feel sort of cold and distant. Happy hour New York, for example, is one of the most alienating experiences that I've ever had. Here however, people are more apt to come up and introduce themselves to you. I can't really explain it. It is just a more fluid, laid-back social environment. I could really get used to living here I think.
