I remember the first time I got glow in dark stars. I must have been about 10 years old at the time. I was going to the planetarium with my parents. I was a sickly kid, you see, and so I had missed the field trip to the science center. When I got better, my parents took me straight to the planetarium. They knew how much I loved space. I adored it. I had always wanted to be an astronaut.
The planetarium show was so beautiful that it almost made me cry. I can't exactly explain why. It had been a difficult year for me, but seeing the whole universe there laid out in front of me and explained made me feel somehow more comfortable. My parents usually do not believe in souvenirs, but this time they took me straight to the gift shop. They bought me a pack of glow in dark stars to put my wall.
Most kids loved glow in the dark stars the way that they love anything that glows . Kids like glow in dark necklaces, glow sticks, black lights, and anything else like that. For me, however, it was different. The glow in dark stars had a special meaning to me. Each glow in dark Star, you see, represented another world. The world I was in them – the world of illness and uncertainty – did not seem to hold a lot for me. But all of the worlds that I imagined to be around me seemed full of unlimited possibilities. This is why I decorated my walls with glow in dark stars. I wanted to remember that there were always other things going on, other possible ways of living my life. It is a lesson that I have remembered to this day.
It may seem strange to you, but I still decorate my walls with glow in dark stars. Nowadays, I am less haphazard. I draw the constellations or artful designs on the wall, but the principle is the same. I have grown into a strong, healthy young man, but I still remember how things used to be for me. It was tough for me growing up, and I never want to forget how I had to struggle. Now, however, things are easy for me. I rejoice at the progress that I have made, and I hope that my life stays the way it has become. I still treasure those glow in dark stars. |
